Muse is probably one of the bands that not many of my peers can appreciate (to be fair, they're all for mainstream pop and alternative). I can name around 4 or 5 people of my age who like them as much as I do. Most of the time, when they ask me what's playing on my iPhone and they hear "Bliss" blaring out of my earphones, I go on and on and on about the band.
Around September of last year, Muse came out with a new album called "The 2nd Law". The name of the album, in case any of you are asking, actually came from the second law of thermodynamics. One thing was certain when I heard it for the first time: it's different. You start with Supremacy and further into the album, you have no idea what you're listening except for the fact that it's Muse; that, in itself, is not a bad thing. Four singles have already been released; one of which is the official song of London 2012. Bassist Wolstenholme has also provided vocals for two tracks; these same tracks are also written by Wolstenholme. The band has definitely delved into something new, stepping out of their comfort zones. Muse is a band that lives on being different, and The 2nd Law is reeling in new listeners.
Final Verdict: 9.5/10
The whole album is a mish-mash of different things but Muse just makes it work. You have strong beats then you have the melancholic ones, and when you finish listening to the whole album, the only thing you can say is "...wait, what?" And you go on listening again until you find yourself getting lost in the album once more. For some, it could be a bad thing. But for me, I find that as the best part.
